Tribasic Calcium Phosphate - TCP

Tribasic calcium phosphate is a calcium salt of phosphoric acid and is categorized as an inorganic compound. It occurs as a white powder that is stable in air. It consists of a variable mixture of calcium phosphates. It is insoluble in alcohol and almost insoluble in water but is readily soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid and nitric acids.

Food Applications

Infant Nutrition:

Tribasic calcium phosphate usually referred as tricalcium phosphate (TCP), is a calcium salt that is frequently used as a calcium source in baby food. It is a white, flavourless, and odourless powder generally recognised as safe (GRAS) for use in food and infant formula.

Tribasic calcium phosphate contains calcium which is an essential mineral that plays an important role in the development of healthy bones and teeth, nerve function, muscle function, and overall growth and development. Tribasic calcium phosphate is an excellent source of calcium due to its high elemental calcium content, typically containing around 38-40% of calcium by weight

Acidity Regulator:

Tribasic calcium phosphate is also used as an acidity regulator in food and beverage applications. As an acidity regulator, tribasic calcium phosphate is used to adjust and control the pH of food products.

pH is a crucial factor in food applications since it has an impact on the flavour, consistency, stability, and shelf life of different goods. TCP functions as a buffering agent as well, limiting the amount of variations in acidity or alkalinity that might adversely affect the pH of food and beverage items.

Mineral Fortification:

Tribasic calcium phosphate (TCP), is commonly used for fortification in food and beverage products. Fortification is the process of adding essential nutrients to food products to increase their nutritional value that may be lacking in the average diet, with the goal of improving public health by addressing nutrient deficiencies

Bones and teeth formation, health of the nervous system and muscles, among other physiological functions, depend on calcium, an essential mineral. Tribasic calcium phosphate is an efficient ingredient for fortifying food and beverage products because it is a good source of calcium.

Pharma Application

Glidant:

Tribasic calcium phosphate is used as a glidant in pharmaceutical manufacturing to improve their flow properties and prevent them from sticking or clumping together, which can occur during the manufacturing process.

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, tribasic calcium phosphate may be used as a glidant in solid dosage forms, such as tablets and capsules, to enhance the flowability of the powder during the formulation and manufacturing processes. It can help improve the uniformity and consistency of the powder, allowing for better blending, mixing, and compression into tablets or filling into capsules.

Tablet and capsule diluent-filler:

Tribasic calcium phosphate can be used as a diluent filler in pharmaceutical manufacturing which are are used in pharmaceutical formulations to add bulk or volume to solid dosage forms, such as tablets or capsules, while providing little or no therapeutic effect. Diluents are often added to facilitate the processing and manufacture of pharmaceutical products, such as improving the compressibility of powders or aiding in the filling of capsules.
